Influences That Affect Children and Young People’s Development
201 2. 1abc Describe with examples the kinds of influences that affect children and young peopleââ¬â¢s development including: Background ââ¬â depending on the childââ¬â¢s background we can assume that they will generally either do well in class or suffer consequently with poorer work in class. For example if a child has poor up bringer such as no help with their work, parents not encouraging them, suffer from poorer quality of life etc, then this will then lead the child to not do well in school and suffer with many of their lessons.Health ââ¬â if a child is health and suffers from no major illness then this child will then do will in their lessons. Whereas if a child has poor health and does suffer from a major illness then they will do poor in their lessons. For example if a child with a major illness like cancer then the child is likely to miss a huge amount of school time because they will have to keep going to the hospital, so this means that they will miss out on many lessons and will fall behind in their work.Environment ââ¬â a childââ¬â¢s environment will depend upon the quality of their school and their home life. If they have nice family life and a nice school then this means that they will do better at school because they have all the necessary items that would be needed to help them with their education. If a child has a poor home life factors like encouraging parents who offer no educational support then this means that they may not do well in school because of having no one to encourage them with their work that they have been doing.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (Psychology)
In Germany, psychiatrists regarded OCD as a disorder of intellect. The German word for ââ¬Å"obsessionâ⬠is Zwangsvorstellung and was translated as ââ¬Å"obsessionâ⬠in Great Britain and ââ¬Å"compulsionâ⬠in the United States. The term ââ¬Å"obsessive-compulsive disorderâ⬠became the compromise term. Over time, the way people view O. C. D. has changed. For example, in the seventeenth century people who suffer from obsessions and compulsions were thought to be religious fanatics or melancholic (Frankel, 2011). It wasn't until the European Renaissance that people first began relinquishing the belief that mental illnesses like OCD were caused by devil or other supernatural forces. Based on this reasoning, treatment involved banishing the ââ¬Å"evilâ⬠from the ââ¬Å"possessedâ⬠person through exorcism (steward, 2009). OCD can happen to anyone. You could be rich or poor/ black or white. It has happened to people such as Martin Luther (1483-1546) the most important leader of the protestant of reformation in Europe. John Bunyan (1628-1688) the writer and preacher that is famous for his writing Pilgrim's Progress. Dr. Samual Johnson (1709-1784) wrote the first dictionary in the English language. Many people often wonder what causes OCD. Experts don't know what exactly caused OCD, but they suggest that it may be a problem in the way one part of the brain sends information to another. (Peterson, 2001). When your brain doesn't have enough of serotonin (a brain chemical) it causes problems. Experts also believe that problem related to infections, such as: strip throat or scarlet fever can cause or make the disorder worse. Brain scans of people with OCD have shown that they have different patterns of brain activity (Price, 2007). Some cases may even be genetic. OCD isn't caused by family problems or attitudes, but genetics, or stressful events may trigger an episode of the disorder. The symptoms of OCD vary it can be mild to severe and even come and go. The most common symptom of OCD is Anxiety. For example, you feel a sense that something bad is going to happen if a task is left undone, such as check again and again to see whether the flat iron is on. If you fail to check you feel tense or anxious. Obsession symptoms are unwanted thoughts, ideas, and impulses that you have again and again. For example, a fear to hurt yourself or a love one, need to do something perfectly or correctly and a fear of getting dirty or infected (Malik, 2008). Compulsion symptoms are behaviors that you repeat to try to control the obsession. For example: washing, checking, counting, repeating, hoarding and praying. The most common compulsion is washing and checking. Doctors check for OCD by asking about your symptoms and your health past. A physical exam is given to the patient. Mental health assessments are given as well, it is an evaluation of your emotional functioning and your ability to think, reason, and remember. People with OCD live with the condition for years before being diagnosed (Wilkins, 2000). Some people go without treatment because they are embarrassed to talk about their symptoms (Ego). Conditions that co- exist with OCD is Anxiety Disorders, Mood Disorders (Depression and Bipolar Disorder), Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Eating Disorders and Autism Spectrum Disorders. There are three main questions that a doctor will ask to decide rather you have OCD or not ââ¬Å"Do you have repeated thoughts that cause anxiety and that you cannot get rid of no matter how hard you try? , Do you wash your hands frequently or keep things extremely clean and neat? Do you excessively check things? (Weinstock, 2010). â⬠Also to be diagnosed, the obsessions or compulsions must be time-consuming to the point where it interferes with your daily life. The earlier it is detected the better because there are proper treatments that can improve OCD (Romito, 2007). Treatment for OCD is good, about 50% of patients improve and about 10% recover completely (Abramowitz, 2009). Only 10% get worse in spite of therapy (Abramowitz, 2009). The four Rââ¬â¢s you should keep in mind when trying to overcome OCD relabel, reattribute, refocus, and revalue (Segal, 2012). Relabel is Recognize that the intrusive obsessive thoughts and urges are the result of OCD. Reattribute is to Realize that the intensity and intrusiveness of the thought or urge is caused by OCD; remind you that OCD thoughts and urges are not meaningful, but are false messages from the brain. Refocus is when you find ways to work around the OCD thoughts by focusing your attention on something else, at least for a few minutes. Revalue is the key to not take the OCD thought at face value. It is not significant in itself. There are Medication that a doctor can prescribe to you depending on the severity of your symptoms they are known as Selective Serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) ââ¬Å"antidepressantsâ⬠they include Prozac, Luvox & Zoloft (Sadock, 2007). It can take up to twelve weeks before the medicine to take effect after prescribed. Consistency is important for both counseling and medicines. People who don't take their medicines regularly or stop often have their symptoms return (relapse). With therapy, it is important to work with your doctor to find out when, or if, you should stop. Counseling is available as well; cognitive-behavioral therapy called exposure and response prevention is considered the most effective type of counseling for OCD. Your relationship with your therapist is very important. Finding someone who is right for you is critical to your success in overcoming OCD. The therapist for exposure and response prevention counseling would require you to write down all of your obsessions, compulsions, and things you avoid. Doing this you will then rank each of them from highest to lowest. Throughout the sessions you will be exposed to your obsessions, compulsions, and things you avoid in order to help overcome the faulty beliefs (Lewin, 2011). There are home treatments that you can use to reduce overall stress. For example, taking deep breathes, soaking in a warm bath, listening to smooth music, exercise, yoga, etc. In rare cases surgery can be done. Which uses surgically implanted electrodes in the brain, and magnetic stimulation of parts of the brain are done for severe OCD. Deep brain- stimulation and vagus nerve stimulation are possible surgical options that do not require destruction of brain tissue. In one study, 30% of participants benefited significantly from this procedure (Roth, 2010). The procedure only can be performed in a hospital with specialist qualifications. This is done only when you aren't responding to any other treatment or procedure (Williams, 2010). OCD is usually confused with two things Obsessiveââ¬âcompulsive personality disorder (OCPD) and an addiction. OCD is ego dystonic, meaning that the disorder is incompatible with the suffererââ¬â¢s self- concept. While OCPD is ego syntonic, it is the behaviors, values, feelings, which are in harmony with or acceptable to the needs and goals of the ego, or consistent with one's ideal self-image (Morse, 1998). Addiction can be explained as the fact or condition of being addicted to a particular substance, thing, or activity. OCD is different from behaviors such gambling and overeating ddiction. People with these disorders typically experience at least some pleasure from their activity. OCD sufferers do not actively want to perform their compulsive tasks and experience no pleasure from doing so (Marlatt, 2008). Therefore, OCD is a long- term condition that can be improved over years of medication and/or therapy. In the United States, about 1 in 40 adults and 1 in 100 children have OCD. According to the World Health Organization, OCD is one of the top 20 causes of illness-related disability, worldwide, for individuals between 15 and 44 years of age (Smith, 2012).
Affinity Orientation Discrimination Cases Study Essay
Imagine that you are a department manager and you find out that a man you work with has become a woman, or you find out a woman you work with enjoys the private company of woman, would these concepts cause you to discriminate against your employees in the workplace? Analysis of case studies, understanding applicable laws, and recommending clearly defined policies for the workplace will assist with understanding and preventing affinity orientation discrimination. It is important in todayââ¬â¢s workplace to have an intricate understanding of the difference between affinity orientation and the word sex as it pertains to Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Title VII). The term sex referred to in Title VII represents the gender of an individual employee. Affinity orientation refers to the intimate relationship that an individual may have with another individual of the same gender, or an individualââ¬â¢s desire to become the opposite gender, either temporarily or permanently. There are various types of affinity orientation, none of which are protected by Title VII (Bennett-Alexander, 2001 p.243). One example affinity orientation would be a woman who is a lesbian or a man who is gay. It is becoming increasingly popular for men and women to have a surgical procedure performed to become the opposite gender; this too is a form of affinity orientation. Affinity orientation has become a subject of adversity in the workforce as a result of there being little protection against discrimination for employees participating in the various types of affinity orientation. Case study analysis is a method that management can utilize to better understand affinity orientation in the workplace and preventing discrimination. Case Study #1 Michael is employed at ABC Hospital as an operating nurse. Michael had taken a leave of absence from work to have a gender change operation. Upon Michaelââ¬â¢s return to work at ABC Hospital Michael wanted to be addressed byà the name Michelle. Since Michelle completed the gender change surgical procedures she felt that she had the right to utilize the womenââ¬â¢s locker room and shower like all the other women employed at ABC Hospital. The male employees did not want Michelle to use the menââ¬â¢s locker room because of her gender change. The women refused to share the womenââ¬â¢s locker room with Michelle, because the women knew of Michelleââ¬â¢s original gender. At ABC Hospital it is standard procedure for operating room nurses to wear unisex surgical scrubs. Therefore, I do not see the reason why she want use the men locker and shower room. Michelle is not wearing a uniform dress with a cap as a nurse while at work. I feel that she is still considered as a man. Michelle is hoping to file discrimination against her co-workers since having the sex change because no one is accepting her as a female. If she were hired as a male she should not feel discriminatory. I think that she should be accommodated with a locker room and shower that is for either a man or a woman. Case Study #2 Tracy is a lesbian who alleges that she has been denied an internal company promotion due to the fact that her department manager does not want to support her lesbian lifestyle. Mr. Green, Tracyââ¬â¢s department manager, is accused of discriminating against Tracy by not writing her a letter of recommendation for a promotion. Tracy feels that the excellent yearly performance reviews that Mr. Green wrote for her entitles her to obtain a letter of recommendation from Mr. Green. There are legitimate reasons for Tracyââ¬â¢s discrimination claim to be denied. Title VII offers protection against discrimination at the workplace; however, Title VII does not protect against affinity orientation in the workplace. There are no federal laws that prevent a person from being fired or refused a job on the basis of affinity orientation. There are however, the First, Fifth, and Fourteenth Amendments to the Constitution of the United States of America, that offer freedom of speech, the right to privacy, and equalà protection under law (Bennett-Alexander, 2001, p.243). Tracy does not have a discrimination claim against her department manager Mr. Green as a result of affinity orientation. Tracyââ¬â¢s supervisor Mr. Green gave her excellent annual performance evaluations that are more than sufficient enough to apply and expect to be eligible any company promotions. Mr. Green is not obligated to give employees letters of recommendation for promotions, transfers, or applications for employment inside or outside of the company where he is employed as a department manager. The company followed all employee performance review procedures correctly. It is standard practice for companies to place the best-suited candidate in vacant positions. The use of employment evaluations ensures that all candidates are given equal opportunity for job advancements. Should Mr. Green have given Tracy poor performance evaluations on a consistent basis, Tracy may have been able to prove a discrimination claim. It is important to have set policies in place to keep employees informed of what criteria must be met for company advancement or promotions. Employment manuals are a suitable method of ensuring that employees are notified of company policies. In an effort to eliminate future claims of discrimination in the workplace relating to company advancement, Mr. Green should have established set policies regarding letters of recommendation. It is recommended that Mr. Green have the employee manual clearly state that department managers are not permitted to write referral letters for employees applying any positions within the company. The policy would be based on the fact that a letter of recommendation made by a department manager could indicate preference in the workplace and unfair advantage for certain employees. Another option Mr. Green could have implemented would be to permit employees to obtain letters of recommendation from sources outside of the company. Outside recommendations could strengthen an employeeââ¬â¢s resume while not creating the opportunity for discrimination in the workplace. An implemented policy that addresses the importance of an employeeââ¬â¢s ability to meet andà satisfy the requirements of the position would lessen the likeliness of a discrimination claim. Regardless of which position the company takes with respect to letters of recommendation, employees would be advised of company policies well in advance of applying for any positions within the company. Taking precautions in the workplace through the use of implemented policies can eliminate potential discrimination claims. Analyzing case studies, reviewing applicable laws, and recommending policies for the workplace are an excellent method of preventing affinity orientation discrimination. Family Support Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Family Support - Case Study Example Now, her and Leon reside in a studio apartment in substandard living conditions. The toilet constantly runs, and there is peeling paint, which can become a safety hazard to the baby. Marceline and Leon have complained to their landlord about these issues; however, the landlord is not receptive to the complaints, though, he does allow Leon and Marceline to pay the rent late, so long as they pay in the same month and pay the late fee. Along with the financial trouble that she finds herself in, she is having relationship troubles, as Leon is very impatient towards her son, who obviously suffers from a developmental or behavioral problem of some sorts, and he is not at tentative to her, since the both of them have fallen into financial trouble. She has fallen into alcoholism to cope with life's difficulties, as she states that she consumes a number of alcoholic beverages during the evening in order to calm her nerves, and she abuses other substances from time to time. Leon engages in thi s behavior right along with her for the same reasons. Marceline is very confused about who to remain in a relationship with, as she has been intimate with Michael, as a result of troubles with Leon, and Michael wants to be in her life again, helping and caring for his son Michael Jr. Marceline is so consumed with her troubles that she has even considered suicide as a means to ridding herself of the current problems and frustration at hand. In addition to her relationship troubles, her son, Michael Jr. is having troubles of his own. Michael Jr. is twenty-six months old. He is extremely avoidant, and has significant troubles communicating his wants and needs. He does not try to talk, and he throws tantrums on an almost constant basis. His young mother is so overwhelmed with him that she takes him over to his grandmother Grace's house, who is the mother of Michael Jr.'s father, and this woman also wants to take full custody of him because she feels that she is able to care for him bett er than his mother, who has even stated, out of frustration, that she has no desire for him, as she regrets having this child because she is unable to bond with him, due to his behavioral issues. Marceline is actually willing to give this child to Michael and his mother Grace without issue because the baby already spends a significant amount of time over at Grace's house, and Leon is in agreement. Though Marceline is frustrated with her son's behavior, and though she is fed up it is noticed that this is not what she wants to do, as she ends her first session by stating that she wishes to move in with Grace and her first love, Michael. In order to repair this family's situation and bring about stability, there are a number of issues that need to be addressed in a systematic fashion. In order to even begin helping the family tackle any of their issues, interviews need to be conducted with parties will be significantly involved in the outcome of Marceline and her son Michael Jr. These individuals are the baby's father, Michael, Grace, who is Michael's mother, and Marceline herself. There is no need for an interview with Leon, as he is merely a man on the side, and Marceline's goal seems to be that she wants to restore relations with her husband and move into her husband's family's home. Though she states in the beginning that she wants to repair her relationship with Leon, this is not what she really wants, as her statement at the end of her session makes

I address the standards by providing avenues towards realization of the standardsââ¬â¢ goals. One of the ways in which I address the common core standards is by promoting readership among students, as well as identifying, and monitoring the developed reading potentials. This motivates reading interest and identifies special cases for personalized assistance. I however rely on offering directions to develop writing skills that includes review of literature to comprehend its contents before writing. Instructing the students on selection of resources, exposing them to a wide range of literature and tailoring writing to achieve a communication role achieves this. I also address the standards by promoting teamwork, developing a ââ¬Å"multiple perspectivesâ⬠(Bunch, Kibler and Pimentel, p. 6) approach to encountered literature and instilling confidence in ââ¬Ëself-expressionââ¬â¢ within classrooms (p. 1- 8). Pharmco National - Essay Example What is effective and evident practice of one manager does not necessarily mean appropriateness to other managers as well. Sharing of knowledge as one context in the system does not get an absolute support from the employees, considering the fact that it is one investment that they nurture through years of experience and they are not set of giving it. Doubts relating to threats in position exist among managers that impede them to be one in meeting the intranet prospects. Likely, each function performs in a world different from the others and concentrates on meeting the objectives of their particular area only. Knowledge capturing by intranet system differs from person to person interaction in conceptualization of information. Knowledge barrier is evident in all concerned functions, particularly among Marketing and Sales role that speak their own language in performing their respective responsibility. The Intranet system does not bridge the differences of each area and utilization of knowledge for use by others. There is absence of common contextualization of the knowledge management system that makes it difficult to acquire participation of involved personnel. 1. The project fails to account the details of the nature of responsibility of involved function.

Reliability & Maintenance of Solar or Wind renewable energy systems Research Paper - 1
Reliability & Maintenance of Solar or Wind renewable energy systems - Research Paper Example Every failure has a cost attached to it. The principal reliability-linked factors of cost through the useful life of an item being Design & Development, Production and Maintenance & Repair, evaluated in the backdrop of installation and environmental parameters like temperature, humidity, vibration, corrosion by chemical attack etc. and the degradation caused by the combination of a few or all of them. A higher reliability invariably envisages higher production, design and development costs, whereas, appropriately factored-in maintenance and repair costs can lead to higher levels of reliability. In the context of non-sustainability of the current energy practices, dawning of global awareness that renewable energy sources are the only way out, has led to a sensible emphasis on solar energy as one of the (wind energy being the other) most abundant and attractive renewable energy source, easily available for harnessing. In the scenario of rapidly depleting natural energy sources like coa l, oil and natural gas, the solar option has presented itself as an alternative which is being vigorously pursued for viability for commercial exploitation in the longer run. A system that uses solar cells and solar panels in a mechanical system that collects, transforms DC current into AC current and stores the electricity for later use is often called Active Solar Energy. The deeper ââ¬Å"Bath Tubâ⬠assumes the shape of a ââ¬Å"Shallow Panâ⬠in the case of static equipments predominantly deployed for renewable energy applications, as far as reliability is concerned; the failure zones in this case are therefore not pronounced. Ge neration of electricity in Solar updraft towers Solar towers use an array of reflectors termed ââ¬Ëheliostatsââ¬â¢, approximately 120 sq. meters in size. Located on top of 150 meters tall towers within receptacles, these are directed towards the sun for direct absorption of the heat of the concentrated solar radiation. Operating temperatures close to 1000oC can be attained depending upon the choice of the heat transfer fluid (HTF) which in turn also decides the design of the receptacle, lined with the very best quality insulation material for optimum performance. High reliability is foreseen at the design stage itself. Likely failure points are identified in advance using the FMECA (Failure Mode Criticality and Effect Analysis) technique and appropriate specification de-rating vis-a-vis the liberal vendor rating is resorted to, for ensuring realistic unhindered performance. Finite element thermal simulation and sensitivity analysis to comply with the thermal specifications als o forms part of the internal product review. External third party assessment provides inputs for MTBF (Mean Time between Failures) calculation for useful lifetime assessment, maintainability and manufacturing as part of an iterative design process for consistent improvement of product designs and individual components. PHI 101 Metaphysics and Theories of Reality Essay
PHI 101 Metaphysics and Theories of Reality - Essay Example We live in a dynamic universe. Knowledge is continually evolving. Progress on the scientific, economic and political fronts is essential for survival. Stagnation leads to entropy. There can be no standing still or going back. Growth is a fact of life and ensures that knowledge is continuously updated, and new paradigms constantly replace the old. Once the dynamic nature of knowledge is accepted, it follows that there can be no single universally accepted paradigm to withstand the test of time. Perceptions and standards change over time and become relative to a particular period or civilization. There can be no absolute standards. Each new discovery indicates the shortcomings of previous perspectives. This mandates openness to the diversity of life. When knowledge is continually evolving, and change is inevitable, bigotry has no place in belief systems. By acknowledging that beliefs and values are relative, we open our minds to the viewpoints of others. This approach can contribute towards a better understanding of different perspectives and constitute a bulwark against fundamentalism and rigidity in beliefs. The study of knowledge clearly offers evidence of the interdependence of all aspects of the world. The evolutionary nature of the universe, and of knowledge, tends towards increasing complexity. This includes social complexity. The contemporary theory of ââ¬ËOpen Systemsââ¬â¢ emphasizes that all systems are open and demonstrates that there is interaction on all fronts, both within the component parts of a system, and with the surroundings. Interaction is a prerequisite for growth. The complexity and organization of a system can be maintained only through this openness. Just as the units of nature are interdependent open systems, human society is also an open system which can survive only through interaction. Mutual interdependence is a fact of human life. We

FMC Aberdeen Organizational Behavior Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
FMC Aberdeen Organizational Behavior - Essay Example The major issue in the structure of Green River hampering growth and affecting profitability is its authoritative management, bureaucratic culture and non-sharing of information, views and needs of the company by the employees between themselves and the management. But there is a system of hierarchy, which makes the views and ideas to produce a chain reaction, but the speed with which the reaction was occurring was not enough for the growth of the company. Hence an effective communication enabling system of structure and culture should be adopted by the management to make green river stand on the lines of Aberdeen. The crucial success factors are enthusiasm, emotional attachment with the company's growth prospects, career enhancement opportunities and performance based incentive appraisal system of and for the employees. First the employees must be assembled into groups and teams which make communication between different departments possible. This is necessary because when the finance department is ignorant of R&D's needs, it will be a suicidal aspect for the company in the long term, for the hampering in R&D work will effect the company's efficiency negatively. Similarly when purchase department is havin... This can be made possible making teams with employees from different departments and directly reporting to the Managers about the changes and needs of and in the company. These implementations will affect the profitability, ability and efficiency of the company positively provided they work in an environment that is conducive. The personal prejudices should not influence the appraisal process. The appraisal process may regard to the needs of R&D, purchase, and marketing. When the needs of customers and clients were not genuinely communicated to R&D wing - it never matters how high the personnel of that department may excel the company will never be able to deliver according to the needs of its customers. When the purchase department does not communicate with other departments the needs and necessities of those are not addressed properly and it in turn hampers the performance of employees and profitability of the Company. When the employees playing crucial role in the marketing department are more interested in technical matters the marketing done by the company will be just an artifact but never delivers. But in the Green River the teams and groups, which are a symbolic representation of modern corporate culture, which reduces the authoritativeness by improving conduciveness, responsibility and accountability, cannot be implemented overnight. The causes may be many. The ignorance and reluctance of employees and management to the new system, the employees placed in wrong places with regard of their interests, the absence of performance appraisal system which can make employee too mechanical regarding his work. These problems should be addressed in a phased manner. As a first step management

Living As If God Does Not Exist Essay Since ancient times, alongside societyââ¬â¢s development is the widespread proliferation of the religious consciousness of mankind. Although primitive small-scale societies had always been depicted as animists and polytheists, the concept of the High God is a common theme that has already been discovered. Studies of ancient societies have revealed in the belief of a Supreme Being, although this was also coupled with worship of lesser spiritual entities since the Supreme God seems distant and uninvolved in daily concerns of men. Compared with modern men, people of the ancient past were mainly agricultural communities. They are basically more aware of their natural surroundings and the different forces which affect his sustenance and survival. Many of these forces are beyond his control and understanding. Early man was therefore more inclined to acknowledge the existence of a Great Being who is responsible for the existence of the world and the one who is in complete control over all. Worship, whether to God or lesser spirits, has often been closely associated with receiving favour and positive results, or to ward off negative conditions like sickness. But current mode of attitudes and perspectives that pervade modern men has increasingly being held under the spell of beliefs that exclude God and the invisible world from the realm of reality and day to day living. Such an approach to life however, is not entirely exclusive in modern times. This was already present in the distant past where there were critics of religious beliefs for instance among some of the ancient Greek philosophers and the Roman Lucretius; in India, where most see it as a rich place of religious practices, materialism has already flourished at the time of the Buddha and for many centuries afterward which basically rejected all belief in a transcendent world; and in China, rationalist Confucianism often involved a rejection of religious doctrine. But these protests against the existence of and reliance of a Supreme Being or of spirituality in general, are only sporadic and never gained majority allegiance during its time. But this is now greatly pronounced in the modern period than ever before, since the powerful restatements of atheism and agnosticism have found a wide success in acceptance and following. The rise of the scientific discoveries and inventions, as well as the increase of intellectuals has made it more ideal to reject the existence of God and other religious values. Man sees himself as the ultimate controller of his destiny, as he experiences more control of the things that affect him. As greater understanding of the world around him is achieved, man sees a greater lack of importance in relying on an unseen and somewhat ââ¬Ëdistantââ¬â¢ God. Modern man is also pressed with many concerns. The large masses of manual workers that were born of out of industrialization in the big cities of northern Europe have caused them to become largely alienated from the faith of their fathers. It is both the social and intellectual forces which have thus combined to promote a widespread practical atheism. There are mainly anti-religious ideologies of modern man which has come to influence modern day thinking. First, was the growth of liberal humanism that principally influenced the western world. This philosophy is rooted in the scepticism of the eighteenth century; it received a greater momentum from the religious controversies of the nineteenth century. Second, was the spread of German type of atheism which were popularized by the writings of Feuerbach, Marx, and Nietzsche. Nietzsche even pronounced the death of God in one of his writings. He announced the death of God, as man is ââ¬Ëawakenedââ¬â¢ to the ââ¬Ërealityââ¬â¢ that God is only a creation of the human mind. Todayââ¬â¢s society is very much influenced, although mostly indirectly, by the banner of humanism that fiercely denounces the existence of God and His requirements. Humanism passionately proclaims that the acknowledgement of God is a declaration of war against life, against nature, against the will to live; and that Christianity is the formula for every slander against this present world and guilty of proliferation of ââ¬Ëliesââ¬â¢ of a world beyond or afterlife. Out of this, came the atheistic Communist ideologies, which for some time in the past, has pronouncedly divided the world. Then, there were also the philosophical movement known as Existentialism, which ironically had Christian origins through the work of Kierkegaard, has nurtured within it a newer type of atheism, popular since the Second World War. Such a deluge of assault on the Christian faith would seem overwhelming and puzzling to those who profess faith in it. God and Christianity seem to have often called down upon strong denunciations. But it is not entirely out of reason. There has been the spectacle of inter-denominational strife, the growing cynicism towards the authenticity of those who were key figures of the Christian faith as against their extravagant lifestyles, memory of persecutions, and the political conservatism of many Christians all these must be taken into consideration. However, what could be considered a more major reason for rejection is because of the more common association of Christianity with Puritanism. There have, indeed, always been pronounced ascetic elements in the Christian experience, although they are considerably less than in most other of the world religions. It can be said though, that Puritanism and ascetism obviously have important place in certain kinds and phases of different religions. Puritanism demands the population at large to conform to it. Central to the Christian belief is the submission to the Supreme Being, and His instructions. The world, as symbolized by Nietzsche, continuous to express a strong reaction against such beliefs. God and his laws are often received as restrictive, since manââ¬â¢s experience show that he possess desires and instincts which often goes in conflict to what God approves, and must therefore contend with it for most of his time. For most men, this seems to constitute a kind of conspiracy to confine human self-expression and freedom. It is not surprising then, to see an abundance of decay in wide areas of society, since unwillingness to submit to Godââ¬â¢s authority is more appealing in order to gratify the self. God is therefore seen as an enemy against the fulfilment of the desires and plans of the self. In addition to this, many simply suspect that those ââ¬Å"kill-joyâ⬠Christians, do make those impositions on others condemning jollification and gaiety, as an unconscious repressions and anxieties which stems from Freudian influence. The rejection of the divine and supernatural is not just a mere intellectual scepticism about the truth of God and Christian beliefs; it has also been an emotional rebellion as well. Social factors have contributed. As we have seen, the dislocations caused by industrialism in many Western countries, have produced the alienation of much of the working masses from Christianity. In addition, social forces have brought a distrust of the older forms of authoritarianism. This was already demonstrated between the World Wars, the rejection of being ruled by a higher force. Moreover, this has been heightened after the war where many younger folks have opportunities of work and spending that often creates a sense of being relatively independent. This new found independence rewards manââ¬â¢s desire to be the sole controller of his own life. Such an attitude was already displayed since manââ¬â¢s creation. Self-rule, the rebellion against Godââ¬â¢s authority has become the norm. With this development, the traditional forms of Christian teaching and preaching and the presentation of the ethical side of Christianity as something fixed and God-given have not had a widespread effectiveness. What is more popular in many folks of todayââ¬â¢s generation is the adherence to anti-authoritarianism and which continuous to stimulate anti-Church feeling, even to the political level. Various advocacies that are being presented with much militancy and following today (i. e. same sex-marriage) run in complete opposition to God- declared laws. It is therefore not an unexpected condition that those who support such advocacies will reject Godââ¬â¢s authority and existence. Godââ¬â¢s ââ¬Ëin-existenceââ¬â¢ would mean that man can do whatever seems right in his own eyes. Truth and right is therefore relative. Also, aside from the agnostics and anti-religious atheism, are those within the so-called Christian societies, are a large number of people who simply do not attend church or religious ceremonies (Smart, pp. 558-573). They are not necessarily lacking in religious belief, but nevertheless they do not feel themselves called upon to belong to any religious organization. They are people who live in a large, gentle twilight zone between religiousness and agnosticism. They have inherited much of the humanist movement, but they do not share the intellectual presuppositions. They include many, therefore, who, when asked, profess belief in God or more vaguely in a Power which controls the cosmos. But they are not convinced of actively participating in worship of such a Being as something essential of oneââ¬â¢s existence. They are not inclined to pray, seek God, read the Bible, though they might possibly do so in times of stress or great danger. They are, for the most part, alienated from the fellowship with God and the fellow believers. They are aware of the differences of teachings in different denominations, and are thus mistrustful of dogma. They have no wish to deny Godââ¬â¢s existence outwardly, but they do not desire to seek and know Him. They have reverence for a Creator; but they feel that God is distant and detached. They respect Christian moral values, but they reject Puritanism. They do not have much sense of sin, but they admire saintliness. They are worried by death, and they hope to live for a better afterlife. But the division between heaven and hell they do not feel. Such people far outnumber the committed atheists and the explicit agnostics. For many members of society today, science possess greater prestige derived from the practical benefits of technology and the awesome mumbo-jumbo surrounding the expert, has superseded that of religion. The current civilization can be depicted in such a state. Although the blatant atheists and agnostics have been relatively few, the influence of their thinking has been formidable. Despite the ââ¬Ëadvancementââ¬â¢ in knowledge, man has generally been ignorant of God and His ways. What is generally esteemed as ââ¬Ëwiseââ¬â¢, those who reject God, does not see the pointlessness of their argument. Creation itself speaks as a witness to His superiority and existence. What is evident in creation is the presupposition of a Creator. If the world and the universe came out of chaos, scientific discoveries show that everything in it has a purpose and held with much order, which could not basically flow in congruence with the ââ¬Ëaccidentââ¬â¢ theory. Also, the amazing functions of the human body, also defy such a premise that man was created by chance. For man to reject his Creator and His authority is one of the most miserable and worse thing that has occurred to man. Man indeed is very much in need of redemption from the futility of his own way of thinking. Reference: Smart, Ninian. (1984). Contemporary Religious Experience. The Religious Experience of Mankind. The Potential Pros And Cons Of Recycling Environmental Sciences Essay
The Potential Pros And Cons Of Recycling Environmental Sciences Essay What is the reason behind recycle? Using less money is behind think the desire to save money, energy and earths resources is the main reason behind recycling. As is well known that the less energy is used the less pollution is released by factories. What is the importance of Recycling? We can summarize the importance of Recycling by the following points: saving energy saving land space saving money creating new jobs reducing air and water pollution preserving habitat for wildlife. For the above mentioned reasons you should make recycling as a habit in your daily life. Saving energy: Producing new materials takes more energy than using recycled materials. We can use the paper as an example, creating paper from new woodland cost more energy than recycle paper from waste materials, since there will be no need to cut down a new tree to process the wood from the tree and make it into paper. The most attractive thing is that energy from non-renewable resources is protected and saved for future generations therefore, money will be saved which means more competitively priced goods, and on the other hand pollution and missions are reduced when less energy is used. When we transfer the above information in to numbers we find that production of recycled paper uses 80% less water and 65% less energy, and produces 95% less air pollution than virgin paper production. 2 -à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã
â Air Pollution and Water Pollution Noxious gases and chemicals are released by decomposing waste at landfill sites. And it is very well known that gas and chemicals create air pollution Air pollution . And when chemicals leach into the groundwater this creates water pollution and our water is contaminated . It is noticed that in 2000, recycling of solid waste prevented the release of 32.9 million metric tons of carbon equivalent (MMTCE, the unit of measure for greenhouse gases) into the air.à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã
â (Recycling-Guide) We are able to breathe cleaner air and drink cleaner water if we could prevent pollution by using recycling centers instead of landfills. Additional Benefits Preserving wildlife is a result of recycling, because fewer trees are cut down to make virgin material or to make space landfills, habitat for wildlife remains. More habitats for animals mean less animal extinction. It obvious that recycling is important and it can makes a difference. We may not be able to solve our landfill and pollution problems anytime soon, but at least we can help keep them from getting worse. Recycling is simple it might start by taking paper or plastic or both to a recycling bin near your home and no need to drive or to waste your time or your gas. You can make it a habit that in your shopping you can fill up your car with your box of recyclable paper and dump it at the recycling bin near the store especially that many grocery stores now have these bins available or even start in your neighborhoods curbside recycling program. Recycling helps conserve energy and reduce the consumption of natural resources. And it is the best way to save the environment and avoid environmental harm. You can make useful items from used plastic bottles, glass, and newspapers. Recycling has positive effects such as : 1- Recycling Preserves the Environment Protecting the environment is processed by recycling . For example we as the demand for paper increases, a number of trees are being cut to produce paper since the demand for paper increases. We can prevent the destruction of forests by recycling paper. We can notice how number of forests is being destroyed to meet the ever increasing demand of paper. Recycling a ton of mixed paper or newspaper is equivalent to saving 12 trees by this way we can save our natural resources. 3 2- Recycling Saves Energy Recycling used materials reduces energy requirements in many manufacturing processes such as refining and mining. Recycling materials like aluminum and glass can greatly reduce the pressure on energy resources. 3- Recycling Reduces Pollution Hazardous substances in the form of plastics, empty cans, chemicals and ordinary waste contaminate our environment and cause pollution. Plastic recycling is an effective solution for the pollution of soil and water which is caused by the Plastic waste. Using materials from the plastic waste by recycling process can be used in manufacturing industry. Environment can also be polluted by greenhouse gas emissions which were found that this recycling 35,116 tons of material could be equivalent of taking 22,140 cars off road and this could help to mitigate global warming effects. Recycling material requires less amount of energy therefore by Manufacturing plastics and paper from recycled material save our environment than making them from new or virgin materials which also need transport this virgin materials and Transportation means using vehicles that run on fuels like diesel and gasoline. It is very well known that fuels are considered the main source of green gas emissions. In this case recycling means less fuel being utilized and lower amount of carbon dioxide will be released into the environment. 4- Negative Effects of Recycling There can be a few harmful effects of recycling, if the sites where recycling is done, are not managed properly. Which means that those sites can become unhygienic as a result of collecting lot of debris every day for recycling? The surrounding environment can be severely damaged by the abandoned dump sited, a poisonous mixture knows as leachate will be formed and it is highly dangerous if it reached the water supplies. The water and soil can be mixed by the harmful chemicals in the trash then mixed with rainwater which falls on open dumps which will percolate deep into the ground and pollutes the ground water. Paper recycling can be a bit costly, as additional industrial processes such as bleaching, are required to make the paper reusable. There is no guarantee that the new recycled product obtained will be of good quality. This is because recycling involves manufacturing products from used materials. Protecting the environment is processed by recycling. For example we as the demand for paper increases, a number of trees are being cut to produce paper. 4 Due to the use of harsh chemicals in the process of bleaching and this can cause health problems on exposure. It is quite difficult to recycle all the material such as find plastic convenient for everyday use because there different kinds of plastic and one has to sort them systematically so as make a useful recycled product. One cannot simply manufacture a new product by combining different kinds of plastic. Still it is observed that different kinds of plastic and one has to sort them systematically so as make a useful recycled product. One cannot simply manufacture a new product by combining different kinds of plastic. It is obvious that taking everyday trash to the nearest recycling center can make a positive impact on the environment therefore everyone must take the initiative to recycle waste material in order to preserve and protect our planet, The Cairo Slum is an example of Recycle success A local school funded by Procter Gamble teaches the urban poor how to recycle plastics. Thomas Taha Rassam Culhane is the founder of Solar Cities, it is an organization that install solar hot-water heaters on the rooftops of Coptic Christian and Muslim communities in Cairos slums. Zamalek is in Cairo , a lush island neighborhood in the Nile, is the heart of the citys upscale area and it is thrives with tourists and commerce. Residents have learned to make a living off the trash from Zamalek and other parts of the Egyptian City. The Zabaleen , an Arabic word means in English garbage collectors, who used to gather and recycle Cairos garbage by their own hands for decades. Tens of thousands of these people took home to a place called Manshiyet Nasser ,which is a narrow dirt streets and precariously built houses, as a place for them to live in. A closer look at primarily Coptic Christian community reveals that Al Zabaleen means of survival may seem lowly but it reveals that something greater is going on here. The Zabaleen, like people living in poor countries around the world, are on the front lines of climate change. The United Nations last year Cited Egypt as an example, and reported that greenhouse gas emissions will have disproportionately negative effects on the planets most impoverished nations. Thomas Taha Rassam Culhane, the founder of Solar Cities and studying for his doctorate in urban planning at UCLA, has a nongovernmental organization that is installing environment-friendly solar hot-water heaters on the rooftops of Coptic Christian and Muslim communities in Cairos slums, says that people in Manshiyet Nasser, environmental degradation is already a reality and they are already living in the worst of it and they dont want to see it getting any worse. 5 Culhane, says although poor people like the Zabaleen dont leave a large carbon footprint because their individual energy use is low but they create a problem for the economy and this should attract an International Attention because the power they do use is subsidized by the government. The Zabaleen are using small vehicles and donkey carts, they haul massive bundles of trash from Cairo and about 80 percent of the garbage they bring into the community is recycled by hand. Picture of children as young as three sitting with their mothers and grandmothers and sorting through broken glass, scraps of metal, aluminum cans, dirty diapers and rotted food is a very normal scene in Cairo. One of the women sorting through piles of refuse saying that she is working all the time and that her hands getting dirty theres no water. She is stating that the food is expensive and gas prices are seven pounds a bottle so they can not afford buying for heat and this why she work such like this. Culhane says that few years ago the Egyptian government decided to privatize the countrys waste-management system, threatening the Zabaleen way of life. But because of Cairos narrow streets foreign companies ,hired to do the job, found that their garbage trucks couldnt do the job stating the donkeys can do such job and therefore the slums residents still collecting much of the citys trash. Several years ago, UNESCO and Procter Gamble began investing in an informal recycling school, officially called the Mokattam Non-Formal Education Project. after the Zabaleens efforts have attracted attention from the international community. The Culhane says counterfeiters used to sift through garbage, take Procter Gamble shampoo bottles, fill them with cheaper products and resell them. In order to get the bottles off the streets, , the Cincinnati-based company agreed to fund the school and help the community learn how to recycle plastic. Now days, the school serves as a center where young people can learn about the business and economics of recycling and it is colorfully painted with PG shampoo bottles. Students are trained to use Excel spreadsheets, and they learn how to shred plastic in machines, wash and dry it using solar energy, bag it and send it out to be melted down for reuse.

Ways Music Brings Us Closer To Truth
Ways Music Brings Us Closer To Truth The quotation from Pablo Picasso said, Art is a lie that brings us nearer to the truth. By art, Picasso meant anything that was of a creative form; painting, literature, music, dancing, etc. The way the word lie is being used is not necessarily they way we would usually imply lying. Lie is used here instead of more like a way or path, or even substance that once weve been engulfed in we can see the truth for what it really is. Truth can be seen in a similar way, its not necessarily the truth but a realization of something that we didnt know about beforehand. The art form that I plan on using to validate Picassos quote is music. With music, you can become closer to the truth through, emotion, the language and words that are being used, with perception. Music, whether being Rap, Classical, or Rock all has a message hidden within the words or instrumentals that are being used. There are many ways in which music brings us closer to the truth, regardless of what genre is used. If a person has just had heartbreak, and choose to listen to love songs repeatedly emotion begins to arise. For a girl, of course she might be in tears and while listening to the songs the thought of her past relationship will come up. But it is possible that by listening to the songs, and the words being said that she might come to the realization that there are other people out there and that the break-up might not have been as bad after all. For a boy, he might use music to help motivate him for a big game that he is about to play in. The language being used could be seen as encouraging words that allow him to be brought up and well prepared for what is ahead of him. For anybody music can motivate, alter feelings or opinions on a matter, or help someone out in a situation. Music can be seen as a second conscience if wanted to be. Going back to the example of a boy being motivated be fore a big game, he is he listening to the song. Heart of a Champion by Nelly, the lyrics that are used in the chorusAint no way they can stop me now Nelly Cause Im on my way, I can feel my ring coming Its the blood of a champion, pumping Deep inside my veins, too much pride to be running Ima get what I can and more, even if My blood, my sweat, and my tears dont mean nothing Its the heart of a champion (its the heart of me) (Its the heart of a..) in me. (http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/nelly/heartofachampion.html) These lyrics can be seem very motivational and almost identical to his thoughts about the game that he is about to play in. There are many theories regarding when and where music originated. Many agree that music began even before man existed. Historiographers point out that there are six periods of music and each period has a particular style of music that greatly contributed to what music is today (http://musiced.about.com/od/beginnersguide/a/intro.htm) The six periods of music include: Medieval/Middle ages, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, 20th century. Music during the middle Ages is characterized by the beginning of musical notation as well as polyphony, there were two general types of music styles; the monophonic and the polyphonic. Renaissance means rebirth and in music this period brought about many changes in the way music was created and perceived. The word baroque comes from the Italian word barocco which means bizarre. The Baroque period was a time when composers experimented with form, styles and instruments. This period saw the development of opera and instrumental music. The music of the Classical period, which spans from 1750 to 1820, is characterized by simpler melodies and forms such as the sonatas. The piano was undoubtedly the primary instrument used by composers during the Classical period. Historiographers define the Romantic Music period from the 1800 to 1900. It is characterized by using music to tell a story or express an idea, and the use of various instruments including wind instruments. Melodies are fuller and more dramatic. Music during the 20th century brought about many innovations on how music was performed and appreciated. Artists were more willing to experiment on new music forms and used technology to enhance their compositions. (http://musiced.about.com/od/beginnersguide/a/intro.htm) Lyrics were actually poetry that is written by a person who has been through a situation and felt the need to write about it. The artist, or songwriter can been see as the person who is setting up the lie to help others come closer to the truth. If the writer has been through a hard time, the music he or she is producing helps those that are listening to realize that everyone is human and we have all been through it. Music can also sometimes be seen as therapeutic, or your own personal therapist. With these kinds of lyrics, they can be seem as almost autobiographical, a prime example for autobiographical lyrics is: Grandpa by Of Montreal. The lyrics in Grandpa are describing what an older man who is obviously a grandfather, does in his daily life. (http://www.metrolyrics.com/the-autobiographical-grandpa-lyrics-of-montreal.html) Lyrics can be calming and help achieve smoothing flows and words that are encouraging, sometimes that is all a person needs to calm down or to perceive someth ing correctly. But what happens when some music doesnt have words but just pure instruments how does a person still become motivated or come to a realization with just pure music? Classical music does not use words, but instead uses instruments to get its point across. How is it possible that with no words, someone can become nearer to the truth? This is where in WOK; emotion and perception comes in. If the tempo in the song is very fast and low, it could make the person realize how angry they are about something, as to where if the tempo is slow and not has low they can begin to calm down. Though the speed and melody that comes from classical music, it can change someones emotion after listening to it. If a person is distraught or very upset, they can listen to a song have their mood instantly altered. This type of music can even help them realize that the situation they are in is not as dire as they perceived it to be. If someone was going into an art museum, and Mozart was playing while people were viewing the art, some would say that it was very calming and allowed them to understand the art being viewed even better. This example shows, that music with or without words can still alter a persons feelings toward something or someone. There is a chance that with the classical music being played, that it could irritate and become very disruptive to a person in a art gallery. Maybe this person cannot stand classical music, or just likes the idea of absorbing the art without any noise being made in the back. Yes, it is easily seen how music can alter a persons feelings toward something, but it doesnt determine whether that alteration is negatively or positive. One genre of music, that may not fully validate Picassos statement, is Rapping. Not of all but most of the rappers talk about all the money, women, and cars that they have. One of the well known rappers of today that go against this statement is Lupe Fiasco. Thus there is still a big issue with a lot of young men who listen to this type of music, because they believe this is the life and that that is actually how the rappers live. Most rappers who actually do all that talking about all the stuff they have, are not speaking of truth. This is where the statement can be seen as invalid. The rapper is telling a lie but he is not bringing the persons listening to him closer to the truth but deeper in non-realistic world. On the contrary, there are some rappers who do live the life they speak of, and someones non-realistic world could be another mans real reality. However, not ever rapper speaks of lies; some tell stories that could be seen as almost fables during their songs. With the ref erence to fables I mean that the songs could be seen as stories that have a hidden story within it. Therefore, not every rapper should be seen in a negative light. Gil Scott-Heron (born April 1, 1949) is an American poet, musician, and author known primarily for his late 1960s and early 1970s work as a spoken word soul performer and his collaborative work with musician Brian Jackson. His collaborative efforts with Jackson featured a musical fusion of jazz, blues and soul music, as well as lyrical content concerning social and political issues of the time, delivered in both rapping and melismatic vocal styles by Scott-Heron. The music of these albums, most notably Pieces of a Man and Winter in America in the early 1970s, influenced and helped engender later African-American music genres such as hip hop and neo soul. Scott-Herons recording work is often associated with black militant activism and has received much critical acclaim for one of his most well-known compositions The Revolution Will Not Be Televised. On his influence, Allmusic wrote Scott-Herons unique proto-rap style influenced a generation of hip-hop artists. (http://gilscottheron.ne t/about/) Music is a big part of my life; I listen to it more than I watch the television. It allows me to get more focus; it motivates me, and allows me to realize things that I would not have been able to on my own. I listen to all genres but my personal favorite is RnB. With RnB the music isnt too fast or too slow, and the messages that are normally being portrayed go along with real life situations, and quickly help me to recover some of the truths that I need about life. Art is a lie that brings us nearer to the truth. Music is an art which is a lie that brings us nearer to the truth, by stating that in my opinion I believe that music is one of the biggest art forms that helps bring people closer to the truth. Music alters peoples opinions and feelings towards things and replaces them with those of the words they heard in the song. Music is everywhere. Even when you wait in an elevator there is music, allowing the ride to be smoothing and relaxing. Music is in the dentist and doctors office while youre waiting so you dont become so antsy. Just while walking in a grocery store if you listen, you will hear music being played while you are grabbing for that box of cereal. Music surrounds us. Music is in nature, the birds singing, the wind blowing, the sun shine-would allow a person to have a good day, as to where if the birds werent singing, the wind was blowing harshly and the sun behind clouds due to the fact of rain the emotion you would feel would d iffer. Music brings us nearer to the truth everyday without us even knowing it. Music tries to do its job but its up to us and how we interpret it whether or not the job was done correctly.

Plant hormones Essay -- essays research papers
Plant hormones are specialized chemical substances produced by plants. They are the main internal factors controlling growth and development. Hormones are produced in one part of a plant and transported to others, where they are effective in very small amounts. Depending on the target tissue, a given hormone may have different effects. Plant hormones play an integral role in controlling the growth and development of plants. A plant hormone is generally described as an organic compound synthesized in one part of the plant and translocated to another part, where in low concentrations elicits a physiological response. There are five generally recognized classes of plant hormones; some of the classes are represented by only one compound, others by several different compounds. They are all organic compounds, they may resemble molecules which turn up elsewhere in plant structure or function, but they are not directly involved as nutrients or metabolites. One thing plant hormones specifically control is gene expression. The exact mechanisms by which hormones regulate gene expression are poorly understood. Gene expression is part of a large amplification process. This process involves repeated transcription of DNA resulting in many copies of mRNA (1st amplification step); mRNA is processed and enters the cytoplasm where it is translated many times by ribosomes into a gene product such as an enzyme (2nd amplification step); enzymes are modified to become functional and capable of high catalytic activity even at low concentrations. They catalyze the production of many copies of an important cellular product (3rd amplification step). It is likely that gene regulation is affected by certain enzymes after initial hormone binding. Genes may be altered by secondary and tertiary messengers of a cellular cascade as well. Hormones may indirectly control gene expression through these enzymes and messengers at a number of control sites such as transcription, mRNA processing, mRNA stability, translation, and post-translation Plant hormones Essay -- essays research papers Plant hormones are specialized chemical substances produced by plants. Hormones may indirectly control gene expression through these enzymes and messengers at a number of control sites such as transcription, mRNA processing, mRNA stability, translation, and post-translation

Technology Against Progress Essay -- Technology Society
Have you ever wonder why you find yourself stuck in an electric breakdown not knowing what to do with your self? Or being compel to look your e-mail or Facebook account everyday day? You are not the only one, our society is depending on an omnipresent source of technology that is affecting every moment of our lives. We are using it as a way to deliver and receive information, to entertain ourselves and express our individuality. It has been growing exponentially since the dawn of time to fulfill humanityââ¬â¢s aspiration. Although, for the new generations, it as been affecting them negatively in crucial aspects of their lives. The lack of physical activities is the number one cause of overweight and obesity for teenagers. Research as proved that, ââ¬Å"For adolescents aged 12 to 17, increases in overweight and obesity rates over the past 25 years have been notable; the overweight or obesity rate of this age group more than doubled, and the obesity rate tripledâ⬠(Margot Shileds, 2008, p.2). Of course, technologies might not be the only source of this issue but consider this, ââ¬Å"For children aged 6 to 11 and adolescents aged 12 to 17, the likelihood of being overweight or obese tends to rise as time spent watching TV, playing video games or using the computer increasesâ⬠. (Margot Shileds, 2008, p.2). In addition, ââ¬Å"According to research, playing video games accelerates the speed at which dopamine, believed ââ¬Å"reinforce behavior that produces pleasure,â⬠is produced. Addictive drugs such as cocaine and heroin cause the brain to produce more dopamineâ⬠(Murray McArthur, 2008, p.418). As you can see, entertainment have a price; not only adolescent spend more time in front of technology apparatuses but they can become strongly addicted to them. ... ...eds, Margot. Marketings Of Green Energy In Mauritius Environmental Sciences Essay
In this paper I am explicating the range, the demand and the usage of green energy in Mauritius, its selling and how it affects the planetary market. Now a twenty-four hours non merely in Mauritius all the states biggest job is the energy and its ingestion ; largely the electricity, the basic needful signifier of all the energy that mankind used widely. Not merely in Mauritius but the whole universe is running for an easy, economic and an eco-free system to bring forth electricity. In this paper I am giving a brief account on the production of green energy, selling of green energy in Mauritius and how its influence the authorities side, the stairss taken from the authorities to advance green energy in Mauritius, their schemes and they work out at that place schemes.1.0 Introduction:In this paper I am explicating the range, the demand and the usage of green energy in Mauritius, its selling and how it affects the planetary market. Now a twenty-four hours non merely in Mauritius all the states biggest job is the energy and its ingestion ; largely the electricity, the basic needful signifier of all the energy that mankind used widely. Mankind made so many engineerings for change overing most sort of energy to electrical energy and he used electricity to run most of his equipments. Just conceive of the universe without electricity, at least a twenty-four hours without electricity or an hr ; we are that much depends to the electricity. Not merely in Mauritius but the whole universe is running for an easy, economic and an eco free system to bring forth electricity. As I worked for the company SUSTAINABLE ENERGY ENGINEERING.Co.Ltd for 7 months, I worked in many Fieldss as an Electrical Engineer, the work for the photovoltaic is one of the head touching undertakings I of all time had. I was in the scheming subdivision of the undertaking, as I used package called SMA-SUNNY DESIGN to plan the works and I noticed how much of energy is made in that works in a twenty-four hours with an initial one clip investing. From that twenty-four hours onwards I was be aftering to do my thesis paper on this. How Mauritius made green electricity, how the authorities helps on doing their dreams come true and how they market this energy. I make this paper with all the relevant information ââ¬Ës I got from my foreman and the manager of the company Mr. Rishi Soodaye who helped in all the ways for the readying of this paper. In Mauritius Central Electricity Board ( CEB ) is the in charge organic structure for the production and allocation of energy on the island under the Ministry of Natural resources Renewable Energy and Public Utilities. While the CEB with the caput office in Curepipe produces approximately 40 % of the entire energy beginning in Mauritius, the remainder is obtained from self-determining Power Producers chiefly via sugar estates. The general electricity per capita per twelvemonth in Mauritius is about 750 kW/h. Energy is produced by thermic agencies ( 80 % ) , H2O, and bagasse ( both accounting for the staying 20 % ) from little sugar estates.A ( Gices, 2011 ) There are 8 hydro electric power workss located scattered largely in the southern portion the island with a subtotal capacity of 59 MW. They are the Champagne Plant ( with a capacity of 30 MW ) , the Ferney Plant ( 10 MW ) , the Tamarind Falls Plant ( 11.1 MW ) , Le Val Plant ( 4MW ) , La Ferme Plant ( 1.2 MW ) , the Reduit Plant ( 1.2 MW ) , the Cascade Cecile Plant ( 1MW ) and the Magenta Plant ( 0.94 MW ) . Because of natural seasonal fluctuations in H2O supply and demand throughout the twelvemonth, the power workss can non run at full capacity or in full efficiency and are therefore non every bit dependable as thermic workss though they are inexpensive to keep but cause serious environmental pollution and cause serious natural environment pollution. ( Gices, 2011 ) Thermal energy is produced in thermic workss that works on heat all located in Port Louis, while Fort Victoria, Fort George and St Louis usage Diesel, the Nicolay Plant uses gas and coal to do electricity. The sum of e nergy produced by the thermic workss is about 324 MW. The hydro electric power workss at Champagne and Tamarind Falls ( based on climatic conditions ) besides use gas to bring forth energy and with the Nicolay works, the three sum to 85 MW. The sugar industry power workss produce around 254 MW of electricity from the FUEL Steam and Power Generation Co Ltd ( 36.7 MW ) , Consolidated Energy Ltd ( 28.4 MW ) , Compagnie Thermique de Belle Vue Ltee ( 71.2 MW ) , Compagnie Thermique du Sud Ltee ( 34.5 MW ) and Compagnie Thermique de Savannah Ltee ( 83 MW ) . Gices ( 2011 ) . Residential gross revenues: Residential gross revenues are estimate to turn from the estimated value figure of 521 GWh in 2002 to 630 GWh in 2011 to 798 GWh in 2012. These figures characterize mean one-year growing or annual rates of approximately 4.9 % over the following 5 old ages and 3.5 % over the undermentioned five old ages. Today the standard Mauritian household unit uses about 1990 kWh of energy each twelvemonth or in yearly. But usage varies widely among suburban clients. From that about 17 % of families consume less than 700 kWh of energy each twelvemonth and about 14.7 % consume more than 2,600 kWh of energy each twelvemonth or in yearly. Appliances or the devices such as air conditioners, dish washers, Television, and place office equipment are acquiring clasp of in popularity in in-between income families. The other common family contraptions such as telecastings and iceboxs are being replaced by larger units of electricity. Many intermediate and high net incomes families are buying or purchasing reproduction contraptions or low quality contraptions or of duplicate things. Commercial Gross saless: Gross saless to commercial clients are calculated to turn from the figure of 450 GWh recorded in 2002 to 600 GWh in 2007 and to 820 GWh in 2012. These figures signify typical one-year growing rates of 7.5 % over the following 5 old ages and 6.9 % over the following 5 old ages. Commercial gross revenues are ordinary to account for the chief growing in CEB ââ¬Ës taken as a whole gross revenues in the coming old ages, as they have done in the past decennary. The typical big office edifice ( 18 floors or above ) in Port Louis consumes about 4.7 GWh of electricity per twelvemonth or yearly, in the order of equal to the ingestion of 3,500 families. Industrial gross revenues: Industrial gross revenues are estimate to turn from the figure of 620 GWh in 2002 to 790 GWh in 2012, stand foring an normal one-year or annual growing rate of 4.5 %2.0 Advantages and Disadvantages of Green Energy:2.1 Advantages of Green Energy:One of the major advantages with the usage of renewable energy is that as it is renewable and there for it is therefore sustainable and so will ne'er run out or complete. Renewable energy comfortss by and large require low care cost than conventional generators ( Whatever generators we use, depends on the system ) . Their fuel that is the natural stuff being derived from nature and available resources reduces the costs of operation. Even more significantly, renewable energy produces small or no waste merchandises such as C dioxide or other chemical pollutants, so has minimum impact on the environment. It ââ¬Ës free of pollution and made no injury to any of the life things. Renewable energy undertakings can besides convey economic benefits t o many regional countries, as most undertakings are located off from big urban Centres and suburbs of the capital metropoliss. These economic benefits may be from the increased usage of local services every bit good as touristry. Most of the undertaking are one clip investing, and will acquire net income throughout the life clip.2.2 Disadvantage of Green Energy:One disadvantage with renewable energy is that it is hard to bring forth the measures of electricity that are every bit immense as those produced by conventional dodo fuel generators ( Comparing to other states fossil fuels are the primary beginning of bring forthing electricity ) . This may intend that we need to decrease the sum of energy we use or simply construct more energy services. The other thing it shows is that it besides indicates that the best solution to our energy jobs may be to hold a balance of many dissimilar power beginnings. Another disadvantage of renewable energy beginnings is the dependability of supply. Renewable energy frequently relies on the conditions for its beginning of power. Hydro power works generators need rain to make full dikes to provide streamlined H2O. Wind turbines need wind to turn the blades so that it can turn the turbines, and solar aggregators besides need clear skies and sunlight to roll up heat and build electricity. When these resources are unavailable so is the ability to do energy from them. This can be mutable and conflicting. The present cost of renewable energy engineering is besides far in surplus of conventional dodo fuel coevals. This is because it is a advanced engineering and as such has enormously big chief cost or capital cost. Energy is simply a transitional good. Consuming energy is a agency to an appendage now a twenty-four hours, the terminal being the status of energy-related demands such as production or fabrication of goods, keeping equal lighting, cookery, every bit long as mobility. The important challenge for sustainable energy use and production is, hence, is to fulfill the suited degree of energy-related demands of every adult male sort or to all citizens is being by utilizing a assortment of engineering and fuels tailored to local state of affairs instead than simply increasing energy supplies, while maintaining the general cost and environmental or the natual harm every bit low as possible.3.0 Methods for Producing Green Energy:Solar Energy Wind Energy Tidal Energy Wave Energy Geothermal Energy Hydrological or Hydro Electric Power3.1 Solar Energy:Solar Energy is one of the widely used methods to bring forth green energy in the whole universe. It ââ¬Ës besides known as Photovoltaic cells. In Solar the sunshine is captured and converted to electrical energy and its stored depends on the demand. For capturing the Sun visible radiation they use a panel called Solar panels, which capture the sunshine and change over this sunshine to electrical energy and stored in a battery, which is taken as we needed. In this paper I mention on solar panels or solar energy or PV ( Photovoltaic ) systems, as widely used method in Mauritius.3.2 Wind Energy:Wind Energy is the 2nd method to bring forth green energy, in Mauritius. In 1995 Mauritius had a undertaking on air current turbines, it was an American based undertaking and subsequently bead because of some proficient jobs. Comparing the air current energy and the solar energy air current turbine undertakings are of high initial cost comp arison to the solar energy. Mauritius is touched with a batch of air currents ; its geographical location is like it gets a normal air current scope from 12.87 Km/Hr to 20-30 Km/ Hr in higher parts. In air current energy a turbine is rotated by the force of the air current, therefore the turbine rotates and electricity is produced and stored on the battery. This method is besides implemented in Mauritius ; a new undertaking based on air current energy is get downing on the South.3.3 Tidal Energy:In an island like Mauritius surrounded by the sea, electricity can be made from the tidal besides. In tidal type energy devising, the motion of the tidal drives the turbine which in bend rotates the rotor and energy is formed and it ââ¬Ës stored in the battery. In tidal energy a tidal bombardment is made, a tidal bombardment is a sort of dike. When the tidal comes and hit on this bombardments H2O hastes through the holes made in the bombardments which turns the turbines. Many topographic points this bombardments are used as Bridgess besides. Tidal energy is widely used in United Kingdom and there it ââ¬Ës a success besides. As comparing to the solar, air current and the tidal, solar power is cheaper and weave and the tidal have about immense initial investings. But in a state like Mauritius here we have a batch of range for this tidal energy. 3.4 Wave Energy: Wave energy is about same as that of the tidal energy. In a topographic point like Mauritius surrounded by sea electrical energy can be taken from the sea. It ââ¬Ës available plentifulness in Mauritius. Big sea moving ridges in the West can bring forth much good sum of electrical energy. Wave energy plants like make fulling sea H2O from the tide to a pit, on the shore which compresses the at bay air in the pit which turns the turbine. By the turbine turns and the electrical energy is formed and stored in the battery. Comparing to all other undertakings this 1 besides has large initial investing. It ââ¬Ës normally used in little graduated tables. 3.5 Geothermal Energy: Geothermal energy is one of the rarest types of energy production in all sorts. It ââ¬Ës used in topographic points with volcanic parts. In this natural heat of the Earth is used. Cold H2O is pumped into the country where big sum of heat is located. This heat makes this cold H2O to evaporate and this steam is collected and used to turn the turbine. This turbine turns make electricity. It has a infinite energy supply but the job is it ââ¬Ës non applicable to every topographic point. It ââ¬Ës successful in topographic points like New Zealand and in Iceland. This undertaking is really unsafe and the hazard factor is really high. This undertaking is besides holding large initial investing. 3.6 Hydrological or Hydro Electric Power: It ââ¬Ës the most common method used for the production of electricity in universe broad. In Mauritius they besides depends hydro electric power. In the southern portion we can see so many hydro electric power workss with a entire capacity of about 59 MW. In hydro electric power workss works in a manner like H2O is collected by constructing dikes. This gathered H2O is passed through high force per unit area pipes and this pressurised H2O is used to turn the turbines. Hydro electric power workss besides depend on the H2O resources and the rain. When the handiness of the rain gets decreases the per centum of electric production besides decreases. Comparing to all the above types initial investing is immense for this. States like India and China depends hydro electric power workss. 4.0 How Solar Energy Grid Works as profit- The Marketing country: In Mauritius people and companies produce solar energy for their ain intent and for net income besides. Its work like this the people or the company will hold three different energy metres one metre will demo how much they consume and the other metre demo how much they produce and the 3rd metre shows the difference. If the ingestion is higher than the production they have to pay from their manus and if the ingestion is less than the production they will acquire the money from the state energy board. Normally the client had to pay the electricity measure individually and acquire a check for the production per units on every three months or six months that depends on the capacity of the works. If it ââ¬Ës a little graduated table works so the manufacturer will acquire the check on every six month and if the works is on a big graduated table he will acquire it on every three month. Government will supply so many aid for bring forthing green energy in Mauritius, Bankss like MCB is supplying 85 % acquisition cost loan on Photovoltaic systems. Government give subordinate financess for supplying these sorts of exposure Gur systems and for the solar H2O warmers besides. Agencies like AFD ( Agence Francaise Development ) besides raise fund for bring forthing green energy in Mauritius. The financess from UNDP ( United Nation Development Program ) can besides used for the production of the green energy in Mauritius. Across most engineerings, renewable energy industries saw continued growing in equipment fabrication, gross revenues, and installing during 2011. Solar PV and onshore or the land air current power experienced theatrical monetary value decreases during the class of the twelvemonth ensuing from flagging costs due to economic systems of graduated table, progress in engineering and other factors, but besides due to decreases or intuitions in authorities policy support. In Mauritius there are no equipments made for the production of Photovoltaic systems. All the equipments they get are from abroad. Most of the equipments are from United Kingdom, United States of America, and Australia and from China. Green power markets besides exist in Australia, Canada, and Japan, and at least one company offers green power to retail clients in South Africa. Major companies are besides playing an progressively of import function in the renewable power sector buying green power, put ining renewable energy systems, and buying Renewable Energy Credits ( RECs ) . Mac Neil Roa ( 14June2004 ) 4.1 Government Influence on Green Energy Undertaking: In partnership with UNEP, the Ministry of Environment and National Development Unit is presently developing or merely doing their measure in National Programme on Sustainable Consumption and Production ( SCP ) for Mauritius. One of the solution precedency countries good known during the scoping implement for the undertaking is the demand for an accomplishment program on Sustainable Energy preservation. A working group was constituted in order to enlarge the accomplishment program. From authoritiess indicate of position there are three sorts of energy ingestions in Mauritius they are: Demand-side energy efficiency: This most important pick relates to industrial or to proficient, executive and character method to cut down or to take down the maximal entire energy needed to light/cool our houses, produce goods, etc. Co-generation: Beginning of on-site or the combined co-generation of high temperature and power can radically better energy competency on the supply side. Renewable energy: Twisted and used or the recycled onsite through biomass or solar thermic aggregators, etc every bit good as that fed into electricity connexion grids. 4.2 Barriers: One of the basic stairss for the necessary to let booming executing of any exploit Plan is the demand to grok the barriers confront it, and how to prevail over those. Barriers to accomplishing the energy competency likely affect both market-dependent issues and academic or the institutional issues. The market barriers put off consumers from purchasing energy competent merchandises and services ; the institutional or the academic barriers put off energy establishments from advancing energy efficiency. One imperative thing is deficiency of consciousness and apprehension of energy competency. Energy competency chances are on a regular basis overlooked due to the simple fact that industry and other consumers are uninformed that they subsist. It is in the intent of this action program to develop consciousness in such affairs and to convey familiarity into the assorted sectors. There is for illustration, a low punter heed of the benefits of specific energy efficiency engineerings and patte rns. Institutional or academic Barriers and confrontation to alter: There is a frequent false feeling, preponderantly in industry, that energy competency will interrupt production procedures and that alterations should non be made unless wholly necessary. Energy Audits will cover with this job. The other jobs are be short of of capableness for carry oning Energy Audits and implementing Energy Management Systems and be deficient in application of up to day of the month direction accomplishments depicting to energy direction in public every bit good as in private sector endeavors. 4.3 Current Status: The one-year or the annual chief energy requirement per capita has been additions from 0.73 metric tons ( tones of oil equivalent ) in 1990 to 1.3 toe in 2011. The entire chief energy requirement was 1380 kg tone in 2011. Mauritius is greatly dependent relation on imported dodo fuels for its energy demands. Around 83 % of the entire chief energy requirement was met by imported fuels ( oil, LPG and coal ) signifier South Africa and from other African states and the staying 19 % acquiring from place beginnings ( bagasse, hydro and fuel wood ) . The largest frequenters of energy were the transit and industrialized sectors which accounted for 50.2 % and 32.6 % of the entire energy use correspondingly. Domestic outgo accounted for about 13.2 % of the entire energy outgo. The part of fossil fuels in the entire energy requirement increased from 64 % in 1992 to 83.4 % in 2007. Programs for mounting good organisation and increasing renewable energy are therefore non maintaining gait with mounting demand and economic growing. The rise in electricity use is at a sustained rate of 6.1 % . The part of electricity from renewable beginnings ( bagasse and hydro ) has decreased from 31.3 % in 1996 to about 24.5 % in 2007. The part of coal in electricity creative activity rose to 41.2 % in 2007 while engagement of fuel oil and Diesel fell marginally to 38.3 % . The concentration of energy usage is 0.62 metric ton per 1000 USD of GDP. This can be related to 0.23 metric tons per 1000 USD in OECD states or 0.19 toes per 1000 USD in EU-15. The possibility for better energy efficiency is evident from today ââ¬Ës immense spread between developed states like Japan and Europe and Mauritius. The Electricity Act 1939, by the authorities of Mauritius as amended and the Independent Power Producers Act control electricity production and usage in Mauritius. The duty is intended so as to depress wastage. Three piece of statute law have been made but non yet come to move, and would hold major impacts or function on the electricity section, viz. the Utility Regulatory Authority Act 2004 by the authorities of Mauritius, the Electricity Act 2005 passed by the parliament and the Competition Bill 2007 by the Mauritanian authorities. Steering rule on electricity is under the answerability of the Ministry of Public Utilities while policy on transit fuel is under the answerability of the Ministry of Industry, SMEs, Commerce and Cooperatives- Commerce Division, with importing issues delegated to the State Trading Corporation. The Final Draft National Energy Policy 2008 passed by the authorities of Mauritius looks forwarded at energy use in both the electricity and transit sectors. The advanced policy and its accomplishment program turn around three nucleus axes: Better energy competency through farther energy competent contraptions or vehicles edifices, labelling, revenue enhancement, strong linkages with sustainable touristry etc. Improved safety of energy provide through augmented portion of renewable in the energy meeting, micro production, C revenue enhancement, utilizing cleaner engineerings or public-service corporations for coal power workss, etc, and ; Droping the privation for energy forces largely through sustainable life styles, improved land be aftering thereby dropping transposing, mass transit, tele-working, flexitime, etc. A very figure of energy decrease undertakings are in the channel and are designed to be implemented by a scope of establishments or through academic schemes. Some of the present enterprises connected to electricity nest eggs are: Numerous programs introduced to the allotment of CEB by CFLs in secondary schools with copybook holding energy stash waies. Manage or command the route or street lighting by CEB and place governments to do certain that street visible radiations do non hang about lighted during daylight. Demand side Management ( DSM ) undertakings by CEB supported through messages and information operation, competition, pulling competition ; free sharing or gifting of CFLs in stray countries and in the island of Rodrigues, allocation of energy salvaging spines and calendars in lower primary schools and in primary schools. In add-on, some of the approaching undertakings in electricity nest eggs are: One important thing is from the beginning that is from the merchandising of Low Energy Compact Fluorescent Lamps ( CFLs ) to the common public by the Central Electricity Board ( CEB ) , at inexpensive monetary value utilizing C acclamation from the voluntary C market. The following thing is the growing of a Grid Code strategy by CEB to give a construction for little and large self-governing generators to import and export electricity on the web. And the 3rd thing is the enlargement of a Time of Use Tariff by CEB to put off electricity usage during peak clip. Energy Savings motion by Energy Services Division of the Ministry of Public Utilities ( MPU ) , by replacing of visible radiations with energy economic system tube visible radiations. Energy Efficiency-Product Labelling program by MPU. Energy Management in usage of thermal made steam derived from fossil-fuels. In the instance of the Textile Industry, by the University Of Mauritius Recommendations Of Utilities Committee at Ministr y of Industry, SMEs, Commerce and Cooperatives by Enterprise Mauritius for modesty competency in industries subdivision. Green Productivity Clinic at National Productivity and Competitiveness Council ( NPCC ) to give assurance cleaner creative activity through improved energy competency along industry lines. And the last thing is the enlargement of an Energy Cluster in Mauritius, to promote solar ( thermic and photovoltaic ) including export prospective. 4.4 Stairss for doing Green Mauritius:Budget 2008-2009: Building Green Mauritius ââ¬â ââ¬Å" Maurice Ile DurableIn the 2008-2009 budget announced, the Minister of Finance and Economic Development announced the revamping of the National Energy subsidise into a Maurice Ile Durable ( MID ) subsidize. The subsidize fund, which will be under the counsel of the MPU, will keep up attempts to guard the environment through procedure of recycling, this give assurance more well-organized usage of energy and hike the dependance on renewable energy. The finance will beat up financess through revenue enhancements, authorities subsidies, enlargement spouses, C credits and the private every bit good as the authorities sector, every bit good as air hoses countervailing their C credits.4.5 Key Steps include:Wind Energy undertaking at Bigara New hydro units at Midlands and La Nicoliere Landfill Gas to Electricity undertaking at Mare Chicose Optimize the usage of bagasse and cane field residues Puting up of an ââ¬Å" Observatoire de l'Energie â⬠and an information run Solar Water warmer loan strategy Decrease of responsibility on solar H2O warmer and spare parts Introduction of summer clip ( pilot undertaking in 2008 ) Puting up of a solid waste recycling plan 50 % decrease of revenue enhancements on intercrossed vehicles Presentation of an ââ¬Å" Energy Efficiency Bill â⬠Increase of Road Tax harmonizing to engine capacity 4.6 Goals of the Action Plan: The chief end of the Action Plan is future to manus unit of ammunition as a route program for Mauritius. To acknowledge the important and reasonable stairss needed for sustainable energy usage. This program gives manner for the instant executing of low-priced intercessions every bit good as high cost steps with short repay periods. These will be followed subsequently by mean term and longer term plus chance. Specifically, the Plan ââ¬Ës general ends for the following five old ages are to do the usage of energy in families, offices, industry and transit become more sustainable. The enlargement of decentralized renewable energy beginnings like solar, air current and tidal is besides an cardinal component of sustainable energy use and will be taken up by MPU following the 2008-2009 budgetary address. The Six schemes identified to run into the above ends are as follows: Strategy1: Energy Savings in the Residential Sector Undertaking 1: To develop minimal energy public presentation criterions ( MEPS ) for cardinal contraptions ( Led by MPU with Ministry of Industry, SMEs, Commerce and Cooperatives & A ; MSB ) Undertaking 2: Phasing out of incandescent lamps ( Led by MPU, with Ministry of Industry, SME ââ¬Ës, Commerce and Cooperatives ( Commerce Division ) & A ; MSB ) Strategy 2: Energy Savings in the Commercial and Industrial Sector Undertaking 1: Capacity Building of Energy Audit Providers and Promotion of Energy Service Companies ( NPCC and UOM ) Undertaking 2: Develop MEPS for industrial boiler efficiency, air conditioning, electric motors/machines ( MPU in coaction with a research establishment ) Undertaking 3: Regular Energy Auditing to be made mandatary for high energy users ( MPU ) Undertaking 4: Aid SMEs in transporting out energy audits with a targeted strategy ( SEHDA, NPCC and Enterprise Mauritius )Strategy 3: Energy Savings in the Public SectorUndertaking: Necessitate all public sector organic structures to bring forth one-year studies puting out their energy efficiency actions and advancement and facilitate exchange of energy efficiency best patterns between public sector organic structures through the web. ( MPU ) This undertaking has besides been identified by the working group on Sustainable Government Practices. Undertaking 1: Require public organic structures to buy merely energy efficient illuming as from 2009 when put ining or replacing lighting ( MPU and Ministry of Finance and Economic Development ) . Strategy 4: Energy Savings in the Transport Sector Undertaking 1: Addition Consumer Knowledge about benefits of Sustainable Driving including providing tools for energy efficient vehicle choice ( TMRSU ) Undertaking 2: Survey on Vehicular Emissions and Capacity Building on Emission Testing ( MOE, MPI and UOM ) Undertaking 3: Influence the consumer to modal displacement and behavioral alteration such as the Park and Ride Schemes, Incentives for auto pooling, Bicycle usage etc through instruction and sensitisation runs ( TMRSU )Strategy 5: On-site Renewable Energy DevelopmentUndertakings under this scheme are to be undertaken by MPU under the execution of the National Energy Policy and Action Plan and the 2008-2009 budgetary steps. Strategy 6: Education and Awareness and R & A ; D Education and Awareness on Energy Savings is looked into by the SCP proficient working group on Education and Communication for Sustainable Lifestyles. However, there is a demand to develop an integrated research scheme that will enable more effectual determination devising by policy shapers. Undertaking 1: Invent a Strategic Research Plan on Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy ( MPU ) This Action Plan will be achieved mostly via enabling instruments and intercessions. These will include inter alia economic and legislative agencies, minimal public presentation criterions, energy direction activities and energy audits every bit good as publicity of efficient patterns. The potency of C finance will be carefully looked into during execution, capitalising on chances available under the current UNDP ââ¬â Millennium Development Goals Carbon Facility. This Action Plan will be implemented through execution squads as outlined within the papers. Systems will be put in topographic point to sporadically supervise advancement against marks. 4.7 Alternate Schemes: Strategy 1: Energy Savings in the Residential Sector Scheme: Home contraptions are the universe ââ¬Ës fastest turning consumers of energy after cars. Residential gross revenues are forecast to turn from the figure of 521 GWh in 2002 to 650 GWh in 2007 to 768 GWh in 2012. These figures represent mean one-year growing rates of 4.5 % over the following 5 old ages and 3.4 % over the undermentioned five old ages. Today the mean Mauritanian family uses about 1770 kWh of energy each twelvemonth. But usage varies widely among residential clients. About 15 % of families consume less than 600 kWh of energy each twelvemonth and about 15 % consume more than 2,400 kWh of energy each twelvemonth. Appliances such as air conditioners, dish washers, place film, and place office equipment are deriving in popularity in in-between income families. Other common domestic contraptions such as telecastings and iceboxs are being replaced by larger units. Many medium and high income families are buying extra contraptions. Efficiency criterions have been successfully applied abroad and hold brought about important betterments in efficiencies. The scheme is to develop Minimum Energy Performance Standards ( MEPS ) for cardinal contraptions to be sold on the market every bit good as a stage out of the usage of incandescent lamps. Failure to follow with MEPS consequences in punishments. An consciousness run must besides be launched to promote consumers to maximise the energy efficiency of their air-conditioners. The purpose of MEPS is to necessitate makers to better the energy efficiency of their contraption designs. MEPS besides have the consequence of taking contraptions with low energy efficiency, from the market. The Committee agreed that as a first measure, MEPS will be formulated for iceboxs and air conditioners. Aim of Scheme: The aim of the scheme is to stabilise the energy ingestion in the families. A specific mark could be to accomplish at least 25 % addition of energy efficient family ââ¬Ës contraptions to be purchased within the following 5 old ages and achieve at least 10 % decrease of mean energy ingestion in the families within 5 old ages. Tools Choice: Merchandise information, statute law and consciousness elevation activities are identified as the most appropriate tools to utilize for advancing reduced energy ingestion in family contraptions. Merchandise information will supply governments and consumers with information on energy efficiency while consciousness raising activities would promote people to purchase energy efficient family contraptions. 4.8 Critical Stairss for Execution MPU to put up an execution squad on MEPS and phasing out of incandescent bulbs Preliminary Industry Consultation and Preliminary Cost/Benefit Analysis The competent authorization ( MPU ) needs to develop the Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards for what is to be considered as energy efficient family contraptions. This should be based on scientific surveies and audience with cardinal stakeholders. Ask for public remark. MPU to outline the appropriate ordinances for MEPS which should stipulate the trial process and the proficient demands MSB would be assigned the duty for proving and to implement the MEPS ( need for resources ) A competent institute to be designated to make full the function of an information Centre supplying information on a regular basis on efficient contraptions and on how to utilize them right. The information is to be disseminated through hotlines, web sites, etc Success Measures/Monitoring What ( index ) : Have the purchased energy efficient air conditioners accounted for 25 % of gross revenues on the targeted market within 5 old ages Who ( will supervise ) : denominate an independent research institute to supervise the index How and how frequently data should be collected: Datas can be collected from manufacturers and Sellerss on an one-year footing or before and after the execution of the tools. Timeline: Initial 1-2 old ages continuance is considered as realistic to transport out the activities above Resources Needed: The MPU has already secured financess from UNDP for the execution of a undertaking on Energy Labelling. This undertaking will include the development of MEPS. Strategy 2: Energy Savings in the Commercial and Industrial Sector Scheme Energy Audits have internationally been used across all sectors to place efficiency steps that can be implemented in a cost-efficient mode. The Plan will advance energy audits as a agency to better energy efficiency. Energy Management Systems enables the formalisation of monitoring, measuring and aiming energy ingestion every bit good as supplying sector-specific benchmarking information. The importance of effectual monitoring and aiming can non be over-emphasized as it provides the yardstick against which nest eggs are targeted and betterments are measured. The Plan will advance the mainstreaming of energy direction systems. Energy Service Companies ( ESCOs ) sell energy services, energy direction being one of the most common activities. The ESCO meet client needs through a comprehensive energy audit service, financing mechanism, equipment procurance and installing and commissioning, monitoring and public presentation warrants. This addresses those state of affairss where companies do non hold the expertness and resources to give to energy direction activities themselves. Although the construct of ESCO is non new, it is non yet developed in Mauritius. There is limited experience in the market place. As a consequence, a assurance spread exists in the market where clients are loath to utilize this service bringing manner. The Plan will be devoted to make a more formal model within which ESCOs can run. This will dwell of commissioned public presentation criterions and approved methodological analysiss for energy efficiency audits every bit good as professionals accreditation. However to be effectual, it is frequently required that both the audits and the execution of steps to be paid by the client and to be made compulsory for certain industries or commercial edifices. The bing Enterprise Development Fund from Enterprise Mauritius can be used by industries to prosecute in energy auditing. The puting up of ESCOs would be facilitated by MPU. 4.9 Objective of Strategy The overall aim is to convey the energy strengths of major industrial and commercial sectors in line with international criterions and best pattern. The specific aims are: Develop MEPS for industrial boiler efficiency, hair-raisers, and electric motors/machines. These are common to many industries. Capacity Building of Energy Audit Providers and Promotion of Energy Management Systems Regular Energy Auditing to be made mandatary for high energy users. Promotion of Energy Service Companies Critical Stairss for Execution The MPU and MRC will put up execution squads who will Research into bing international criterions for common industry equipment ( boiler, motors, etc ) . The criterions will be formulated and adopted. Investigate the status/potential of ESCO market in Mauritius and set up agencies of heightening the publicity of ESCOs within industry and commercialism See a ordinance for compulsory energy audits in specific industries/commercial edifices Led by the NPCC, and together with UOM/MSB/EM, this execution squad will be set up to: Prepare an audit criterion and model Carry out capacity edifice of hearers and test audit strategies through specific sectors. A specialised preparation plan for forces at in-between and top direction degree of major energy consumer organisations will be carried out. The NPCC will committee a confer withing company to carry on the preparation programmed. Participants who attend the plan for the full period would be issued a certification. Develop a enfranchisement Procedure for energy hearers Undertake Energy Management Systems presentation undertakings and look into a plan of industry developing support particularly for SMEs.Success Measures/Monitoring IndexsNo. of energy hearers trained No of ESCOs in the state No of Industries/commercial edifices transporting out regular audits Mandatory energy audits implemented for high energy users Timeline 1-2 old ages Resources An estimated Rs 3 million is required for the capacity edifice undertaking for Energy Auditors which includes the purchase of basic energy usage monitoring equipment and about Rs 1 million for the development of MEPS on common industrial electrical equipment.Strategy 3: Energy Savings in the Public SectorScheme The Government will take by illustration through raising energy efficiency consciousness among authorities employees and by implementing specific steps within its ain edifices. Aim of Strategy To increasingly upgrade the energy public presentation of bing public edifices and accomplish best pattern energy public presentation in new edifices Require all public sector organic structures to bring forth one-year studies puting out their energy efficiency actions and advancement. Facilitate exchange of energy efficiency best pattern between public sector organic structures through the web. Necessitate that public organic structures to buy merely energy efficient illuming as from 2009 when put ining or replacing illuming. Appropriate Procurement standards must be formulated. Critical Stairss for Execution The Energy Services Division under the MPU has already prepared an action program to upgrade the energy public presentation of authorities edifices and the costs will be met under the 2008-2009 budgetary steps. The future Observatories de L'Energie will take the lead to necessitate all public sector organic structures to bring forth one-year studies puting out their energy efficiency actions and advancement and to ease exchange of energy efficiency best pattern between public sector organic structures through the web. The MPU and the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development will work out the procurance standard for energy efficient lightings through the Sustainable Procurement Framework.Strategy 4: Energy Savings in the Transport SectorSchemeThe energy burden of conveyance depends on the system ( the manner of conveyance ) ; the engineering ( the vehicle ) and the user ( driver behaviour ) . The major parts towards energy nest eggs for this sector will originate from a important modal displacement to public conveyance. This issue has non been addressed by the commission as there are a figure of undertaking already in the grapevine. The commission has focused its work on engineering and driver behaviour. Vehicle Technology is forcing towards greater energy efficiency through steps associating to air-conditioning systems, tire force per unit area supervising systems, sustainable biofuels etc. A High-Occupancy Vehicle lane ( or HOV lane ) is a lane reserved for vehicles with a driver and one or more riders. These lanes are besides known as carpool lanes, commuter lanes, diamond lanes, express lanes, and theodolite lanes. The working group was of the sentiment that the TMRSU should look into implementing a High Occupancy Vehicle lane on the M1 from junction Curepipe to Port Louis. The HOV lanes will be for vehicles transporting two or more people. HOV Lanes usually work best associating concentrated residential countries to cardinal concern territories and as such might be executable for Mauritius. Aim of Strategy Feasibility survey on the debut of a High Occupancy Vehicle Lane Provide Tools for energy efficient vehicle choice ( Fuel Efficiency labelling of Vehicles, Change the Vehicle Registration Tax etc ) Maintain fuel efficiency of older vehicles through an Emission Testing system Influence the consumer to modal displacement and behavioral alteration such as the Park and Ride Schemes Increase Consumer Knowledge about benefits of sustainable drive Critical Stairss for Implementation and Financial Resources Required Sensitization of decision-makers ( MPI ) TMRSU to look into the feasibleness of the HOV lane. This is to be included in the Footings of Mention of the adviser working on the feasibleness of the Bus Lane. TMRSU to put up an execution squad for an consciousness raising plan on sustainable drive. This will include information to consumers on efficient vehicles. The cost of the consciousness run is estimated at Rs 1million. The UOM will carry on a study on vehicular emanations. Through this undertaking, capacity edifice of enforcement officers will be ensured. An estimated Rs 100,000 is needed for this undertaking. The TMRSU to implement a Demand-side Management ( DSM ) scheme which include soft support steps for act uponing average displacement and behavioral change-such as promoting cycling, promote auto sharing, flexible working, financial steps such as congestion charges, park and sit schemes etc. About Rs 1 million is needed to kick start this undertaking.Strategy 5: On-site Renewable Energy Development( Bing addressed in National Energy Policy and Action Plan, to be implemented by MPU with aid from Ministry of Finance and Economic Development ) Strategy 6: Education and Awareness and R & A ; DSchemeInformation and Awareness are cardinal elements to accomplish success in footings of altering Mauritius into a more energy efficient society. A National Energy Efficiency run advancing energy efficiency among assorted mark groups through a multi-media run must be launched. This scheme is taken up by the Working Group on Education and Communication for Sustainable Lifestyles. Research is besides cardinal in finding the long term way towards sustainability. Investing in Research and Development is critical to guarantee an addition in the cognition base required to back up the turning energy sector. Technological options represent important potency for energy efficiency betterments. The possible version of internationally available engineerings and procedures need to be researched. There is a demand to hold an integrated research scheme on Energy Efficiency and Renewable energy which will assist policy shapers in better determination devising. Aim of Strategy and Critical Steps for Implementation The future Observatories de L'Energie to originate the amplification of an integrated strategic research program in coaction between UOM, UTM and MRC. This program will steer research establishments in their activities such as undertaking allotment to pupils. The consequences of the research activities must be utile to policy shapers. TEC and MRC to supply support to research workers in precedence countries of research on energy efficiency and renewable energy beginnings as identified by the strategic research program. This will include research families. From all this schemes that authorities put frontward Mauritius can be one of the states which can develop plenty green energy for the demands of the people and for the industrial intents. States like Germany and Spain are the states who take much importance for the green energy and developing it. If they can win why ca n't Mauritius. The large celebrated undertaking in Spain like PS20 ( Planta Solar 20 and Planta Solar10 ) a 20 MW and 50 MW undertaking which makes a good economic stableness in the power field of the state. Mauritius can besides do this sort of undertakings and do it to action and can do net income with a clip rhythm of approximately 15 to twenty old ages. Decision: Renewable accounted for about half of the approximative 209 GW of new electric capacity installed globally in 2010. In fact, non-hydro renewable have accounted for a large and larger portion of new electric aptitude over the past several old ages, lifting from 11 % in 2004 to about 39 % in 2011, while their part to entire worldwide bring forthing capacity has more than doubled during this period. Entire renewable power capacity worldwide exceeded 1,470 GW in 2011, up approximately 9 % from 2010. Non-hydro renewable exceeded 400 GW, a 26 % capacity rise over 2010. Globally, air current and solar PV accounted for about 45 % and 33 % of advanced renewable capacity, in that order, followed by hydropower ( about 22 % ) If there is a suited degree of investing in the Green Energy sector, so it could afford long-run sustainable enlargement and wealth formation to the island of Mauritius, economically and giving so many possibilities of new occupations in green energy Fieldss. However, such plus will necessitate to be coordinated by Environmental and Electrical development and operation. The short-run costs of Government funding would look to be low compared to the possible long-run award available to the Mauritanian economic system. Even with the most hopeful degrees of operation over the following 5 old ages, the spendings in provision of initial direct subsidy are improbable to be much greater than 65 million. Competitively keeping and initialising the ready important island of Mauritius the Green Energy proficiency and industry over that period will let the gap in future old ages to re-examine both the advancement and the economic instance with better and more certain informations, whilst retainin g the option to capture a important piece of a place and planetary market. With a Green Energy sector based upon the island of Mauritius ââ¬Ës native Marine resource, one time developed, this sector is really possible to stay within the island of Mauritius supplying important employment. In decision, for a relatively little initial investing over the following 5 old ages at that place is the chance of go oning along the flight which may finally bring forth a big Green Energy sector with really big benefit. Mauritius is known as the Paradise Island. Make this island a Eden by giving a pollution free environment. As in India peoples of Mauritius had a civilization of giving their wealth and monetary value to the followings or to their kids ââ¬Ës, allow ââ¬Ës hope they will give a pollution free Mauritius to their following coevals.
